Local Citations, And When They Stop Mattering

A local citation is any mention of your business name, address and phone number on another website. Their job is corroboration, not authority: they help a search engine confirm your details are real and consistent. Fixing inconsistencies is worth doing. Buying two hundred new directory entries is not.

Citations are the most oversold line item in local SEO. They are also genuinely useful, which is what makes the overselling effective. The distinction is between consistency, which matters, and volume, which mostly does not.

What is a local citation?

A citation is any mention of your business name, address and phone number on a site other than your own. Directories, trade bodies, chambers of commerce, local press, supplier listings. It does not need to link to you to count.

NAP is the shorthand: Name, Address, Phone. Those three details are what a search engine is trying to corroborate, and corroboration only works when the sources agree.

What do citations actually do?

They corroborate identity rather than build authority. A link from a strong site passes authority. A citation confirms that a business by this name, at this address, on this number, exists and is described consistently by independent sources. That confidence feeds the prominence factor.

This is the same mechanism described in what entity building actually is: a search engine is deciding whether it knows enough about a business to put it in front of somebody. Agreement between independent sources is how it decides.

Does a wrong suite number really matter?

Yes, and more than people expect. St. on one listing and Street on another is a genuine inconsistency. So is an old phone number, a previous trading name, or a suite number present on some listings and absent on others. Each one weakens the corroboration slightly, and a business that has moved or rebranded usually has dozens.

Citation problemSeverityWhat to do
Old address still listedHighFix or remove; it is actively contradictory
Old phone numberHighFix; a dead number also costs enquiries directly
Previous trading nameHighFix; it splits the entity in two
Duplicate listings on one directoryHighMerge or remove the duplicate
Street abbreviated inconsistentlyLowTidy when convenient

Should I buy a citation package?

No. Two hundred new entries on low-value directories addresses a lever that stopped moving rankings years ago, and it creates a new problem: two hundred more places your details can go stale next time you move or change your number.

The work worth paying for is an audit that finds the contradictions already out there and corrects them, plus a short list of genuinely relevant sources you are missing: your trade body, your professional register, the local chamber, the main sector directory for your industry.

When do citations stop being the priority?

Once they are consistent, which for most businesses is a one-off project rather than a monthly line item. After that the returns flatten hard and the budget belongs on the profile, reviews and local links instead.

A provider billing for citations every month, indefinitely, is billing for a job that finished. The honest version is a clean-up, then a check whenever something changes.

Questions

How many citations do I need?

There is no number. A dozen consistent, relevant listings beat two hundred inconsistent ones. The question to ask is not how many you have but whether the ones you have agree with each other.

Do citations need to link to my site?

No. A citation counts as corroboration whether or not it links. A link is a bonus and brings authority with it, but the NAP mention is doing the local work.

What if I run a service-area business with no public address?

Keep the address hidden on your Google Business Profile and be consistent about it everywhere else too. Publishing the address on directories while hiding it on the profile is its own inconsistency.

I have moved premises. Where do I start?

The profile first, then the website, then an audit of every existing citation carrying the old address. Moving is the single most common cause of a large citation mess, and it is worth doing properly once rather than discovering stray old listings for years.
