Local SEO Consultant London
I'm Shahed Parvej, a local SEO consultant in London. Since 2016 I've run local search campaigns for 800+ businesses across ten industries, and the work has one measure: whether the phone rings.
This page is about hiring one. What it costs, how long it takes, when a consultant beats an agency, and how to spot the kind of local SEO that gets a profile suspended. If you want the mechanics of the service itself, that is a separate page.

The Grid Scan
A single ranking number tells you almost nothing in local search. You can sit first outside your own door and be invisible two miles away, and one average hides both.
So the first thing I do is measure it properly: a grid scan across your trading area for one keyword, showing where you hold the Map Pack and where you vanish, plus the one fix I would make first.
- One keyword, your area. You pick the search that matters commercially.
- A visibility map, not a number. Every sampled point, with its position.
- The first fix, named. Not a 40-page report you will never read.
- No call required. If you want one afterwards, ask.
Free. It takes me minutes to run and it tells both of us whether there is work worth doing.

The role
What does a local SEO consultant do?
A local SEO consultant improves how a business appears in Google's Map Pack, Google Maps and local organic results. The work splits across Google Business Profile optimisation, review systems, citation and NAP consistency, location page structure and local link building. It is a different discipline from organic SEO and it runs on different ranking signals.
Google documents three factors for local ranking: relevance, how well the business matches the search, distance, how far it is from the searcher, and prominence, how well regarded it appears. Every piece of legitimate local SEO work maps onto one of those three. Anything that does not is either decoration or a risk.
Local versus organic
What is the difference between local SEO and organic SEO?
Local SEO competes for searches carrying a place name or an implied location, where proximity, your Google Business Profile and your reviews all carry ranking weight. Organic SEO competes for national searches ranked on relevance and authority alone. Most businesses with a service area need both, and the levers barely overlap.
| Local SEO | Organic SEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Query type | Geographic or implied local | National, no place name |
| Primary asset | Google Business Profile | The website |
| Proximity | Direct ranking factor | Not a factor |
| Reviews | Ranking factor | Not a direct factor |
| Results on screen | 3 in the Map Pack | 10 organic links |
| Typical timeline | 3 to 6 months | 6 to 12 months |
The two feed each other. A stronger website lifts local rankings through relevance, and local visibility generates the brand searches that lift organic. But work on one does not automatically deliver the other, which is why a quote for undifferentiated “SEO” usually means the work has not been scoped.
Why rankings shift
Why does my ranking change depending on where I search from?
Because there is no single Map Pack ranking. Google returns a different set of three results depending on where the searcher is standing, so your visibility decays with distance from your address. One tracking number is the view from one street corner.
This is measurable. A grid scan samples the Map Pack at fixed points across an area and records who appears at each one. The pattern it exposes is usually the opposite of what a ranking report implies: strong near the premises, thinning fast, gone entirely past a certain radius.
I published a worked example of this on the Guard Up Pest Control case study, where share of local voice on one keyword moved from 6.1% to 65.3% while average rank barely shifted. The average hid almost the whole result.
Reviews
Do I need hundreds of reviews to rank in the Map Pack?
No. Review count is not the primary driver of Map Pack visibility, and the evidence for that is now reasonably well established. Reviews feed prominence, which is one of three factors, and the recency and steadiness of new reviews carries weight independently of the running total.
Adam Collins published a 49-point grid in June 2026 showing his own profile holding 44.9% share of local voice on 18 reviews, against competitors holding 10.2% on 314 and 0% on 160, with four of the five businesses on identical 5.0 ratings. Corey Hinde of Good Oil Marketing has reported the same conclusion from separate tracking: regular reviews matter more than the total.
Three things follow, and each one moves budget:
- Build a review system, not a review target. Two to four reviews a month, sustained, beats fifty in a burst followed by silence.
- Fix the profile before funding the campaign. A wrong primary category caps whatever any review count can achieve, and it is a free field.
- Never gate reviews. Screening customers so only happy ones get asked breaches Google's policies and profiles get suspended for it.
Cost
How much does a local SEO consultant cost in London?
UK local SEO consultants typically charge £120 to £400+ per hour, or roughly £1,000 to £15,000 per month on retainer, with single-location businesses at the lower end and multi-location brands in competitive London verticals at the top. Those are market ranges rather than my rates, which depend on what the scan finds.
| What drives the price | Why it moves |
|---|---|
| Number of locations | Each one adds a profile, a page and its own citation work |
| Competitive density | Central London verticals need sustained effort, not a one-off push |
| State of the profile | A neglected or suspended profile needs remedial work before any growth |
| Citation inconsistency | Historic NAP errors take time to find and unpick |
| Review position | Building a review system takes longer than fixing a profile |
| Languages | A second language is a second set of pages, profiles and signals |
If you have in-house capacity to execute, an audit on its own is usually better value than a retainer: you get the profile review, the citation check, the competitor grids and a prioritised list, and your own team runs it.
Timeline
How long does local SEO take to work?
Google Business Profile changes move Map Pack positions within two to six weeks. Local organic rankings take three to six months. Competitive London markets run six to twelve. The split matters because it tells you what should already have happened by a given point.
| Window | What moves | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 2 to 6 weeks | Profile corrections, categories, completeness | Changes what Google already knows rather than building anything new |
| 3 to 6 months | Review velocity, on-page work, location pages | Signals that need to accumulate before they count |
| 6 to 12 months | Prominence: local links, brand searches, authority | No shortcut exists for this one |
Ninety days with nothing measurable moving means something is wrong with the work. By that point a sound engagement should show shipped profile fixes, a review flow actually running, and grid coverage gains even where headline positions have not moved yet.
Consultant or agency
Should I hire a consultant, an agency or an in-house SEO?
A consultant gives you senior thinking directly, with nobody in between. An agency gives you execution capacity across a team. An in-house hire costs more at senior level and takes months to become useful. Most single-location and single-service businesses are better served by a consultant.
| Consultant | Agency | In-house | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who does the thinking | The person you speak to | Varies by account | Your hire, once ramped |
| Execution capacity | One pair of hands | A team | One pair of hands |
| Best fit | One location, one or two services | Multi-location rollouts, multi-channel | Search justifies a salary |
| Typical lead time | Days | Weeks | Months |
| Account management layer | None | Usually | None |
I turn down work that does not suit this model, which mostly means national ecommerce with no geographic constraint, and B2B whose pipeline runs on referrals and outbound rather than search. The grid scan usually settles which category a business is in before either of us has spent anything.
Red flags
How do I spot bad local SEO?
Walk away from anyone guaranteeing a specific ranking, selling bulk citation packages, gating reviews, keyword-stuffing your Google Business Profile name, or suggesting an address you do not trade from. Each one either does nothing or risks a suspension that takes months to reverse.
| The pitch | What is actually wrong with it |
|---|---|
| “Guaranteed number one” | Nobody controls Google, and rankings vary by searcher position, so it is not even a coherent promise |
| “200 citations for £99” | Volume on a lever that stopped moving rankings years ago |
| “We filter out unhappy customers” | Review gating. Breaches Google's policies; profiles get suspended |
| “Add your keywords to the profile name” | Violates the guidelines, and any competitor can report it in two clicks |
| “Use a virtual office address” | Fastest route to losing the profile, and reinstatement is slow and uncertain |
| “Here is your monthly ranking report” | One number for a result that varies across your whole trading area |
The honest version of this job has a smaller upside and a much smaller downside. A provider recommending a guidelines breach owes you the risk alongside the upside, and most do not mention it at all.
Google Business Profile
Do I need a Google Business Profile?
Yes. A Google Business Profile is the entry requirement for the Map Pack. Without one you can still rank organically for searches with a place name in them, but you cannot appear in the three-result pack or on Maps at all, and the pack sits above the organic results.
If you have one and its rankings have dropped, the causes are usually boringly specific rather than mysterious. I have written up the common reasons a profile loses Map Pack position separately.
The first month
What happens in the first month?
- The grid scan, so there is a baseline on record before anything changes. Progress gets verified against it rather than asserted.
- Profile audit. Categories first, because the primary category decides which competitor set you are ranked against before any other work matters.
- Citation and NAP check. Finding the inconsistencies that quietly undermine everything else.
- Competitor grids. Who actually holds the pack across your area, not who ranks on your postcode.
- A prioritised plan, ordered by what brings enquiries fastest rather than what is easiest to bill.
Profile fixes ship inside the first fortnight, because that is where the fastest movement is and there is no reason to hold them back.
Who I work with
Who do you work with?
Service businesses with a real trading area: dentists, law firms, clinics, contractors, movers, restorers and cleaners, mostly in London and across the UK. Published work includes six case studies with the full Search Console data attached, including the numbers that are not flattering.
If you would rather see the service itself set out, that is on the local SEO page. If your problem is answer engines and AI search rather than Maps, AEO is a separate service.

Questions,
Answered
Do I need local SEO if I only have one location?
Yes, and it is usually the strongest case. Every ranking signal concentrates on one profile and one service area, so gains arrive faster and cleaner than for a multi-location business splitting effort across many profiles.
Can I do local SEO myself?
The basics, yes. Claiming and completing the profile, fixing NAP inconsistencies and asking customers for reviews are all achievable in-house and cost nothing but time. Competitive markets, multi-location structure and local link building are where experience starts to matter.
What if my business has no public address?
Service-area businesses run a profile with the address hidden and the served areas defined instead. Ranking then leans harder on reviews, service-area content and local links, because proximity to a fixed address no longer does the work.
How do I handle multiple locations?
One page per location and one Google Business Profile per location, not a single page listing every area you serve. Each location page targets its own searches and links to its matching profile. Most multi-location setups I audit get this wrong.
Does local SEO work for B2B?
Where buyers search with geographic intent, yes: accountants, solicitors, recruiters, commercial trades. For B2B with national or international sales cycles and a referral-led pipeline it delivers very little, and I will say so rather than take the retainer.
Will ranking in London help me in other cities?
No. Local visibility improves only in the areas you target. A second city needs its own location page, its own profile where you hold real premises, and its own local signals built from scratch.
Are you a consultant or an agency?
A consultant. You deal with me rather than an account manager, and the person doing the thinking is the person doing the work. That caps how much volume I can take on, which is the honest trade-off.
