Google Business Profile. Map Pack. Reviews.

Local SEO in London

Three results sit in the Map Pack. Everything below the fold is a consolation prize. Local SEO is the work of moving your pin into those three, then holding it when a competitor decides to start spending.

Most people who search for a local SEO agency in London want one thing: more of the phone calls currently going to whoever ranks above them. That is the job. I have run local search campaigns since 2016, for more than 800 service businesses across ten industries.

Why local search rewards

Proximity and Proof

Google decides your local ranking on three things: how relevant you look, how close you are to the searcher, and how prominent you are compared with everyone else nearby. You cannot move your premises. You can change the other two.

Relevance comes from categories, services and page structure that spell out exactly what you do. Prominence comes from reviews, local links and the kind of corroboration that makes a search engine confident enough to put you first.

What that looks like in practice:

  • Google Business Profile systems: categories, services, products, attributes and a posting cadence that signals an active business rather than a dormant listing.
  • Service and location architecture: a page per service, per area, each one deep enough to deserve the ranking it asks for.
  • A review engine: a repeatable request pipeline, so review velocity becomes a system you own rather than a favour you ask for.
  • Local link building: the work a link building agency in London would quote separately, done as part of the same campaign: local press, suppliers, trade bodies, sponsorships and genuine directories.
  • NAP and citation consistency: one name, one address, one number, everywhere a crawler might check.
  • AEO and GEO visibility: being the name ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and AI Overviews give when somebody asks for a provider near them.

Choosing between London SEO providers

Local SEO Agency or Consultant?

If you have been working through a list of the top SEO companies in London, you will have noticed the pricing spread is enormous and nobody explains why. A large part of it is structure. Agencies carry account managers, sales teams and offices, and that overhead lands in your monthly fee before any work happens.

I am not going to tell you an agency is always the wrong answer. If you need paid media, PR, creative and SEO running together at scale, a full local SEO company in London is the right shape. What I will say is that most local service businesses are paying agency prices for work a specialist does directly.

The five stages of a

Local SEO Campaign

No two local markets behave the same way, but the sequence does not change. Fix what is broken, build what is missing, then compound it.

  1. 1

    Audit & Discovery

A full read of your Google Business Profile, your Map Pack and organic positions for the searches that actually convert, your competitors' profiles, and whether your tracking is telling you the truth. You get a fix list ordered by what brings calls fastest.

  2. 2

    Profile & Foundations

Categories, services and attributes set correctly, duplicate listings cleared, suspensions appealed with a proper evidence pack, and NAP made consistent across every directory that matters.

  3. 3

    Content & Architecture

Service pages and London area pages built to match real search intent, internally linked so authority flows where you need it, with schema that corroborates rather than contradicts the copy.

  4. 4

    Reviews & Local Links

The review request pipeline goes live, local citations and links are earned rather than bought, and your entity gets corroborated across the sources Google and the AI assistants already trust.

  5. 5

    Measure & Compound

Monthly rank tracking by grid position, call tracking tied back to source, and a check on what the AI assistants say when asked for a provider like you. Local SEO compounds, so the reporting has to show it.

What you actually get

Included

Google Business Profile management

Ongoing optimisation, posts, products, services and Q&A, not a one-off setup.

Map Pack grid tracking

Rankings measured across a geographic grid, because one central ranking hides the truth.

Service and London area pages

Written and built, not spun from a template with the borough name swapped.

Local link building

London press, suppliers, trade bodies and sponsorships, earned rather than bought.

Review generation system

A request pipeline your team can run without me.

Citation clean-up

Duplicate and inconsistent listings found and fixed.

AI visibility reporting

Monthly checks across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and AI Overviews.

Call tracking setup

So every enquiry is attributed to the search that produced it.

Coverage across the capital

Local SEO Across London

Local rankings are won postcode by postcode, so coverage matters. These are the areas I work in most, though the method travels anywhere in the UK.

Outside the M25, the work is identical. I run campaigns for businesses across the whole of the UK, including Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds and Bristol.

Looking for a Google Maps SEO company in the UK?

Google Maps SEO

Google Maps SEO and Map Pack SEO are the same job under two names. When somebody searches for a service near them, Google shows three businesses on a map before it shows a single website. Getting into those three is the work, whether it is sold to you as local SEO, Map Pack optimisation or Google Maps SEO.

Most Google Maps SEO companies in the UK price this as a separate product. It is not separate. Your Maps ranking is decided by the same three things as the rest of your local visibility: how relevant your profile looks, how close you are to the searcher, and how prominent you are against everyone nearby. Splitting it into its own retainer mostly splits the invoice.

  • Grid ranking, not a single position: your Maps position changes street by street, so it is measured across a geographic grid. One central number hides exactly where you disappear.
  • Categories are the biggest lever: primary category choice moves Maps rankings faster than almost anything else, and changing it casually is the most common way businesses lose positions overnight.
  • Reviews that mention the job and the area: review text is read, not just counted. What customers actually write is what extends your ranking beyond your own postcode.
  • Service-area setup done correctly: if you do not receive customers at your address it has to be hidden, and getting that wrong is the most common cause of suspension I am asked to fix.

An SEO consultant for small businesses in the UK

Small Business SEO

Small business SEO is not big-company SEO with fewer hours. The economics are different, so the priorities have to be. You are not trying to own a national term against companies with a content team. You are trying to be the obvious choice inside a radius you can actually serve.

That makes the work narrower and considerably cheaper than most proposals suggest. A single-location business usually needs its Google Business Profile fixed properly, a real page for each service that earns money, a handful of area pages, and a review pipeline that runs without being remembered. Everything past that is optional until those are working.

It also changes what to ignore. Publishing a blog post every month, chasing links from unrelated sites and reporting on impressions are the three things small businesses most often pay for and least often benefit from.

Working with a London SEO consultancy

London SEO Consultancy

The practical difference between a London SEO consultancy and an agency is who does the work and how much of your fee reaches it. A consultancy is usually one specialist, sometimes a small group, without the account management layer, sales team and office overhead an agency has to cover before anything happens.

What you lose is scale. If you need paid media, PR, creative and SEO running together across several brands, an agency is genuinely the right shape and I will say so. What you gain is that the person who audited your site is the person in your Google Business Profile, and there is nobody translating your problem into a brief for somebody else.

The honest caveat is availability. I take one client per service per area, which keeps the work conflict-free and means I am sometimes the wrong answer purely because a competitor got there first. You will be told that on the first reply rather than after a discovery call.

Some parts of the capital behave differently enough to be worth treating on their own terms. There are separate pages for SEO in Ealing and SEO in Uxbridge, where the local markets and the competitor sets are not the same as central London.

Straight answers

Questions,
Answered

How much does a local SEO agency in London cost, and how do you compare?

London agency retainers for local SEO typically run from about £1,000 to £4,000 a month, and a large slice of that covers account management and overhead rather than delivery. Working with a consultant removes that layer, so more of the budget goes into the work itself. I will give you a figure after the audit, because quoting before seeing your Google Business Profile, your competitors and your current tracking would be guesswork.

What should I look for in the best SEO company in London?

Ask three questions. First, who will actually do the work, and can you speak to them before signing. Second, what they will report on, and whether calls and booked jobs appear anywhere in it rather than only impressions and rankings. Third, ask them to explain something they got wrong recently. Anyone who has run campaigns for real money has a story. Anyone who does not is either new or not being straight with you.

How long before local SEO produces calls?

Google Business Profile fixes and review velocity usually move Map Pack positions within four to eight weeks. Organic service and area pages typically take three to six months to mature. Anyone promising page one in thirty days is selling a report, not a phone call.

Do you only work with businesses in London?

No. I am based in London, at 9 New Change in the City, and most of my clients are London service businesses. I also run campaigns across the whole of the UK. Local search is won location by location, and the method is the same whether the pin sits in EC4 or in Leeds.

My Google Business Profile is suspended. Can you help?

Yes, and this is one of the jobs most agencies quietly avoid. Reinstatement is an evidence exercise, not an appeal form. I put together the documentation Google actually wants, covering proof of premises, signage, registration and operating evidence, then manage the appeal through to reinstatement.

Do you do link building as a separate service?

Not as a standalone retainer. A link building agency in London will sell you links by the month, but for a local business the links that move rankings are local and finite: your trade body, your suppliers, the local press, the club you sponsor. That work is part of the campaign here rather than a separate line item, because buying volume from unrelated sites is how local sites get into trouble.

Do you do ecommerce SEO?

Yes, though it is a separate discipline and it has its own page. Local SEO is won on proximity, your Google Business Profile and the Map Pack. Ecommerce has none of that, so the work moves onto category architecture, faceted navigation and product feeds instead. If you sell online rather than from a location, start on the ecommerce SEO page rather than this one.

Do you work with businesses that compete with each other?

No. I take one client per service per area. If I am already working with a plumber covering Islington, I will not take a second one. It is the main reason my availability is limited, and it is not negotiable.
