Review Recency Beats Review Volume

A steady flow of recent reviews does more for Map Pack visibility than a large total that stopped growing. Reviews feed prominence, one of three local ranking factors, and recency carries weight independently of the running count. Chasing a review target is the wrong objective; building a system that produces two to four a month indefinitely is the right one.

The standard advice is to get as many Google reviews as possible. It is not wrong exactly, but it points the budget at the wrong thing, and the measured evidence has been pointing elsewhere for a while.

Do I need hundreds of reviews to rank?

No. Review count is not the primary driver of Map Pack visibility. Reviews feed prominence, which is one of the three factors Google documents for local ranking, alongside relevance and distance. A large total with no recent additions is a weaker signal than a smaller total still growing.

Adam Collins published a 49-point grid scan in June 2026 for seo consultant london that puts numbers on it. His own profile held 44.9% share of local voice on 18 reviews. A competitor with 314 reviews held 10.2%. Another with 160 held none at all. Four of the five businesses in the comparison carried identical 5.0 ratings, which removes rating as the explanation.

Why does recency carry weight?

Because a review is evidence that a business is currently trading and currently satisfying customers, and that evidence decays. Thirty reviews from 2019 describe a business as it was. Three reviews from last month describe it as it is. A ranking system deciding who to put in front of somebody has an obvious preference between those.

The practical version: a flow of two to four reviews a month, sustained indefinitely, beats fifty in a burst followed by two years of silence. It also costs less to run, because it becomes a process rather than a campaign.

Where should the budget actually go?

  1. Fix the profile first. A wrong primary category caps whatever any review count can achieve, and it is free to change.
  2. Build a request into the job. The review should be asked for at the moment the work is finished and the customer is pleased, not in a quarterly email campaign.
  3. Make it one tap. A short link straight to the review form. Every extra step loses people.
  4. Reply to all of them, including the bad ones. A reasoned reply to a one-star review does more for a prospect reading it than the review does against you.
  5. Keep it running. The system is the deliverable. A target is a project with an end date, and the signal decays after it.

What about review gating?

Do not do it. Gating means screening customers so only the happy ones are asked for a public review. It breaches Google's policies, profiles get suspended for it, and in the UK it also runs into the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024, which treats misleading consumer reviews as a banned practice.

If a provider offers a system that filters unhappy customers out before the request goes, they are describing a policy breach as a feature.

Questions

How many reviews a month should I aim for?

Enough to be steady rather than to hit a number. Two to four a month sustained is a strong, unremarkable pattern for most single-location businesses. The important property is that it does not stop.

Do negative reviews hurt my ranking?

A reasonable proportion of them is normal and a perfect record can read as suspicious to a human. What matters more is whether you reply, and whether new reviews keep arriving. A single bad review buried under a flow of recent ones carries very little weight.

Can I ask customers for reviews?

Yes. Asking is allowed and encouraged. What is not allowed is incentivising reviews, filtering who gets asked based on how satisfied they are, or writing them yourself.

Do reviews on other sites count?

They contribute to prominence more broadly and they matter to the human reading them, but Google reviews are the ones attached to the profile that ranks in the Map Pack. Start there.
